Ruth's blog - June & July
July

June was a bit cooler, wetter and windier than we’d hoped but here comes July! The month when all that hard work in the garden really continues to pay off. The warmer temperatures (fingers crossed) and long, hopefully sunny days mean more time outside enjoying the space you’ve created as well as keeping on top of all those little deadheading, trimming and watering jobs so everything continues looking fabulous.

Flower Borders Jobs

• Light trims for box, bay and olive balls to keep things looking smart • Deadheading herbaceous perennials and roses to keep them flowering • Check plants for pests and consider organic options for control • Keep on top of weeding and edging borders • Cutback ornamental poppies once flowering is over • Feed dahlias

Vegetable Garden Jobs

• Sow spring cabbages • Plant out pencil thick leeks • Mulch strawberries with straw (and enjoy eating) • Water courgettes, fruit trees and bushes • Feed tomatoes

Other Jobs

• Water plants thoroughly in warm weather, especially when there’s a drying warm wind • Keep an eye on temperatures in the greenhouse - don’t forget to ventilate. • Trim evergreen hedges • Make an effort to take time to enjoy your garden with a cup of tea and with family or friends, the perfect excuse for a BBQ
