Introducing Our New Garden Centre Team

We are thrilled to announce Nicola Hayton as our new Garden Centre manager. With a background as diverse as the plants in our nursery, Nicola brings a unique blend of corporate experience and gardening passion to our team. Her journey from working days in bustling cities to the serene landscapes of the Scottish Borders is inspiring and a testament to her dedication to gardening and family.

Lee Renton, who as many of you know, hails from Duns. As well as some time working in hospitality, Lee has been a valued member of the Pearsons Garden Centre team for nearly 5 years and is now Nicola’s assistant manager. Lee brings a wealth of experience to the management team from working in the Garden Centre and from his work setting up the systems for POD Storage and Hire.

From Corporate Life to Gardening Bliss

My story, which is very much like gardening, is one of transformation. For many years, I worked in the corporate world, frequently commuting within the UK and Europe. Glamorous as it may sound, after a while, the travel became a chore that took me away from my family (and my garden) too frequently.

During this time, gardening had always been a therapeutic escape for me, a way to unwind and reconnect with nature. This growing passion, combined with a desire for a better work-life balance, led me to make a significant life change, and in 2021, I left my corporate life behind and joined the team at Pearsons Garden Centre.

Joining the Garden Centre Team: 

When I joined the team, I enjoyed my hands-on role, where I could immerse myself in the daily operations of the Garden Centre, drawing on my knowledge and genuine passion for plants. I also loved learning and gaining an in-depth understanding of gardening, where there is always something to learn.

My Vision for the Garden Centre

As the new manager, I believe gardening should be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of their experience level. So, with this in mind, here is my beginner's guide to gardening.

A Beginner's Guide to Gardening

The hardest part is starting...but to make it a little easier, consider the following:

1. Start Small

Starting with a small garden space or a few pots is less overwhelming. Choose a manageable area and gradually expand as you gain confidence.

2. Choose Easy-to-Grow Plants

Select plants that are known for being hardy and easy to care for. I recommend starting with herbs like mint, and rosemary or flowers such as marigolds and pansies.

3. Understand Your Soil

Knowing the type of soil in your garden is crucial. I recommend conducting a simple soil test to determine the pH and nutrient levels (we stock tests for this). Knowing the pH level will help you choose the right plants and fertilisers.

4. Water Wisely

Over-watering is a common mistake among beginners. I suggest watering your plants early in the morning or late in the evening to minimise evaporation and ensure deep soil penetration.

5. Learn About Plant Care

Each plant has its own care requirements. Nicola emphasises the importance of researching and understanding the needs of your plants, including light, water, and feeding requirements.

6. Be Patient and Observant

Gardening is a learning process that requires patience and observation. I encourage beginners to spend time in their garden, observe plant growth, and learn from any mistakes; don't worry, we all make mistakes - it's part of the learning process. Take notes or keep a gardening journal. We have a lovely stock of stationery in our Garden Centre Shop.
